Genesis 5:3 King James Version (KJV)

³ And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, and after his image; and called his name Seth:

The word translated image is from the Greek word "eikon". It is this same word (eikon) that was translated "icon" in English. An icon in computer parlance is the summary of all the attributes or the shortcut of a computer application and/or function. A desktop icon may appear small in size but it carries in it all the features of the application it represents when clicked upon.

Originally, man was created in the image of God (dominion, power, authority, ability to subdue etc.) but due to the fall, Adam lost this glory and all natural people born into the world are in the image of fallen and sinful Adam (1 Corinthians 15:49; Romans 5:17; Genesis 5:3). Thus, the natural man, no matter how moral, good, nice, philanthropic, and socially acceptable he is, he is still a sinner! Isaiah 64:6 talks of our righteousness (without Christ) being as a filthy rag. Sin is not what you do or fail to do, it is who you are (the natural unregenerate man) - sin is a nature! If a non-believer dies today, no matter how good he is, he will automatically go to hell (John 3:18)!

The natural man does not have what it takes to walk in the realities of God’s image – it takes the enabling power of God’s Holy Spirit to walk in dominion. The natural man may enjoy all the good things of life and this is because the principles of God (Genesis 8:22; Proverbs 22:29; etc) apply to all of nature; the Bible says that God is gracious both to the good and the bad (Matthew 5:45) – but he (the natural man) cannot truly be fulfilled in life without Christ. He will always have a vacuum in his life which only Christ can fill!

The New Creation (2Corinthians 5:17, 21) is the only one who is truly in the image and likeness of God (1Corinthians 15:45-49; Colossians 2:9; Galatians 3:27). Genesis 1:28 and 9:1 appear similar but the dominion part was missing in the latter – this is because dominion is by the Holy Spirit and as such the natural man who is spiritually dead cannot dominate!

The New Creation is the express image of God – he carries the fullness of God in his spirit and like a computer icon, he clicks on God’s icon (his spirit) through praying in the Holy Ghost. If the icon doesn’t respond at first click – DOUBLE CLICK; keep clicking and clicking till the fullness of God pops up in your spirit and permeate every sphere of your life and dealings!
